The 1.75-mile riverwalk is one of the highlights of this great city. That said, the city is a very relaxed beachside town that makes it the perfect destination for Ironman North Carolina 70.3. Ironman North Carolina 70.3 is hosted in the beautiful port town of Wilmington. With one of the best riverfronts, you’ll find that Wilmington is going to be one 70.3 race you’ll remember for a long time! If you’re into ships, coast guard to be specific, the city has been named as the Coast Guard City. As the USCGC Diligence ports here. As do many other medium endurance ships. North Carolina may be quite far from Hollywood, but they share one thing in common. Wilmington is home to EUE Screen Gems Studios. The largest domestic TV and Movie production facility no located in California. Dream Stage 10 is actually the third largest, home to the following: Iron man 3, Dawson’s Creek, and One Tree Hill to name a few. That said if your looking for a 70.3 race that is located in a unique and great place. You need to register for Ironman North Carolina 70.3.
Event Details –
Race Day – Oct 19th, 2019
Before we get too in depth into Thursday’s events. We have to ensure that you check-in on THURSDAY OR FRIDAY! There is no athlete check-in on Saturday for Ironman North Carolina 70.3. That said, be sure to give yourself enough time on Thursday or Friday as this event can be quite busy when it comes to check-in. Aside from that, you can find that Ironman Village, Ironman Store, and the bike store & tech service tent are all open. There are even a couple of athlete briefing events in the afternoon since there is no Saturday check-in. You may be asking yourself why no Saturday check-in, well that’s because it’s a Saturday Race Day. Unlike the common Sunday theme.
If you rolled in late to Wilmington, NC and missed check-in on Thursday. No worries, the event has check-in for most of the day on Friday. The athlete check-in can be found at the Wilmington Convention Center. This same location is the place where you’ll find Ironman Village and Store are open all day. If for some reason you need bike assistance, the Tech service tend is open as well and located in the same convention center. If you have ever raced an event such as Ironman Wisconsin, you may have to check-in your T1 and T2 bags early. This is the case for Ironman North Carolina 70.3. Both your Transition 1 & 2 bags have a mandatory check-in. This also means your bike as well, however, if you’ve raced an Ironman event that is pretty typical. I will remind you though that you won’t have access to your T2 bag on race morning so plan accordingly.
You guessed it RACE DAY! Busses will shuttle athletes (only) from the Hilton Wilmington Riverside Hotel to the Downtown area before the race. The transition 1 area will open before 5 AM, where you can get body marking and finish any last minute details on your bike. The race starts at Wrightsville Beach or Hanover Seaside Club, at 7:10 AM with a rolling start. Overall, the race has a few more unique directions when it compares to other 70.3 events. However, one this that stands to be true is that this is a great, well run event!
Ironman North Carolina 70.3 – Swim
For this event, the swim is a bit unique and quite frequently special. The swim begins at Hangover Seaside Club which sits along the harbor and Wrightsville Beach. Athletes will complete a 1.2-mile-point-to-point swim that finishes at the Wrightsville Beach Park. One of the great benefits of this swim layout is that the course isn’t affected as much by the ocean currents, winds, or waves. As a result, making this a very successful swim.
Ironman North Carolina 70.3 – Bike
As you exit the swim and make your way through transition to grab your bike and helmet, you’ll begin your journey North on an out-and-back 56-mile route. The ride takes you through iconic Wilmington, NC. However, you do have the privilege to enjoy the many country roads that are flat and extremely fast. So if you’re ready for a PR race, grab your gear now.
Ironman North Carolina 70.3 – Run
If you’re looking for a race that will provide some lasting memories and beauty. Then Ironman North Carolina 70.3 is a great choice! The run begins quite some distance from where the swim took place. Beggining in downtown Wilmington, NC, you’ll have some historic views on the run. The run portion of the race was designed with spectators in mind so be sure to enjoy the atmosphere. From downtown you’ll run towards Greenfield Lake area. Along this lake, you’ll find some much-needed shade and even Spanish moss. The 70.3 run offers a fairly flat and fast route, which is perfect for all triathletes.
Places To Stay –
Located just north of Myrtle Beach, Wilmington, NC is a great destination if you want to enjoy the ocean and history. The port city provides plenty of accommodations for tourists, vacationers, and of course Ironman athletes! However, if this is a new race for you, you may find yourself unsure of the location of a hotel to stay. Thankfully, we have put together a couple of recommendations to make your stay easier.
Embassy Suites by Hilton Wilmington, NC –
Located just one block from the finish line you’re going to find that the Embassy is the #1 choice. Now make sure you book well in advance as this can get full. What you will find is that the Embassy offers two suite rooms. Therefore, plenty of room for your bike, shoes, and whatever else you bring. Let’s not forget they serve a large breakfast every morning and even have a restaurant.

The Embassy is our #1 choice for triathletes. You’ll want to stay here if you have spectators as it offers the best access to the finish line compared to any other hotel.
Best Western Plus Coastline Wilmington, NC –
Located within walking distance from the finish is the Best Western Plus. Now it’s nearly as close as the Embassy Suites, however, it isn’t the “official” accommodations. Nonetheless, the Best Western is a great highly rated hotel in Wilmington, NC. I would recommend this hotel if the Embassy is all booked up. However, you will find that the Best Western is a great hotel for the Ironman North Carolina 70.3 and offers a great location.

Places To Eat –
When you spend a weekend in Wilmington, NC for your 70.3 race you’re going to need to eat. Thankfully, it won’t take you more than a couple of blocks to find some great dining. However, to get you started we have put together a couple of great starting places.
The Copper Penny –
If you do come to the 70.3 race in Wilmington, NC you’ll need to visit The Copper Penny before or after your race. Located in the historic downtown area. The Copper Penny has a great menu that includes some delicious appetizers, salads, and sandwiches. However, if you’re coming in after your race you’ll need to check out their extensive collection of mixed drinks and beers to celebrate your finish.
